Apprenticeships

At Riverlution

At Riverlution, we are proud to be shaping the future of the environmental sector by delivering high-quality apprenticeships that equip individuals with the practical skills and knowledge needed to thrive in water environment work.

After many years of hosting apprentices through the Level 3 Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship, we are thrilled to announce that we are now delivering the programme ourselves. It is a real full-circle moment for us – combining our experience as hosts with our passion for hands-on environmental education and workforce development.

Our programmes offer more than just training. They build careers, strengthen communities and help protect and enhance our rivers, coastlines and wetlands.

Apprentice Journeys

Riverlution has always believed in the power of learning through doing. For years, we have welcomed apprentices from across the country, working alongside us to maintain, restore and celebrate water environments.

  • Apprentices will build a strong foundation through the following core units:

    • Asset, Habitat and Water Level Management

    • Partnership and Project Work

    • Practical Access and Asset Maintenance

  • Learners then choose one optional specialism to tailor their apprenticeship experience:

    • Managing Assets and Responding to Major Incidents

    • Working with Volunteers

    • Maintaining and Working with Heritage Assets

    • Water Level Management, Flood Risk and Drainage

Each apprentice also completes an extended project linked to their chosen optional unit and prepares for their End Point Assessment as part of the programme.

  • The programme runs over 13 months, with the option to extend to 18 months if required. It combines five block weeks of in-person training at sites across Yorkshire and the Humber — offering a mix of inland and coastal experiences — with around 12 hours per month of guided self-study, completed during regular working hours. Apprentices also complete two remote modules featuring self-led learning and live online classes. Throughout the apprenticeship, each participant is supported by a dedicated skills coach who provides regular guidance, monitors progress, and ensures they stay on track.

  • The apprenticeship is fully funded by central government for learners aged 16 to 21.
For levy-paying employers (those with an annual wage bill over £3 million), the programme costs £12,000, drawn directly from the levy pot.
    For non-levy employers (learners aged 21+), a 5% co-contribution fee of £600 applies.
All LANTRA registration and End Point Assessment fees are included.

  • Apprentices and employers receive ongoing support through regular progress reviews, line manager check-ins, and email updates from skills coaches if tasks or Off-the-Job (OTJ) training fall behind schedule.
